Husband, Son, Father, Brother.
All special, and makes me so happy to have them each in my life. My brother took me on a date recently! Kina Grannis, an independent musician that we both like, was playing at the Fillmore in SF just the other night and I was invited to go with him. It was a blast in every way and I treasured the whole evening.
Over 21 stamps! It’s starting to feel a little silly- maybe they should have “way over 21″ stamps.
After the concert we drove to the Presidio and hung out- I had to make it last and stay out late right? What kind of date ends at 10:30? I made it home at a more acceptable 1 a.m. I honestly can’t remember the last time I was out on the town that late- obviously, since I totally fell asleep during the last leg of the drive home. Thanks little bigger bro….

I heard a crash in the back office. A minute or so later Nolan emerged from that room slowly and said to me,
“Uhh mommy, there’s nothing wrong. There’s nothing wrong back there.”
Me: “Oh? Nothing wrong eh? Maybe I should just check.”
The lamp had fallen over and broken the shade entirely off. In Nolan’s defense, Ben had already knocked it over 2 nights before and started the whole shade braking process.
As I looked at the lamp Nolan said to me, “there’s nothing wrong with the lamp…there’s nothing wrong with it.”

So if you just happened to walk outside and see this, wouldn’t you about have a heart attack to? I wasn’t sure how to respond. Nolan happily turned and was clearly very excited to be hanging out on top of his playhouse roof. And in that moment I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about it- mostly what came out of my mouth was,
“NOLAN! Woa….Uhhh…..I don’t know if that’s okay honey….I guess you look pretty stable up there….BE CAREFUL!….maybe you should get down….uhhhhhh….how about you sit down?” Nolan hasn’t been a climber till now, so I didn’t know quite how to respond- of course I want him to be safe, but at the same time, I know it’s going to be the normal course of events for a boy to start climbing things…..

Pushups were certainly around far before Crossfit came on the scene, but in Nolan’s short lifetime, pushups haven’t been something Nolan would even be aware of until I started attending Crossfit 5 months ago and he started hearing me talk to Ben about it and watching me show Ben all the stuff we’ve been doing in class.
I’m not the only one in this family to show Nolan how to do a pushup, but just yesterday evening we went to the park kind of late and we had the whole place to ourselves, so while playing, I incorporated some Crossfit moves like jumping squats and walking lunges to wake myself up and have fun with Nolan, including some pushups. Then this morning while getting ready for the day, Nolan jumps on his bed and says,
“I’m gonna do some squishups on my bed heah (here).”

It was cloudy when we left. While we were gone some voracious sounding thunder and lightning started happening and some seriously monster rain droplets started falling in great number.
By the time we got home I knew my poor little chicks were going to be sopping wet and freezing because I hadn’t thought to put the waterproof tarp over their little “kiddie pen” outside when we left. I quickly changed out of my skirt and donned my oilskin jacket that was a gift from my late grandpa and Ben’s stetson style black hat that he’s had since not long after we met (16 years now).
Already feeling like a rancher
- I dug my heels into my ugly snowboots and swooped out into the stormy night armed with two Trader Joe’s bags to rescue my chickens. They were all huddled in one corner together, except for Snow White who was still attempting to sit on her perch and one of the Americauna chicks who oddly enough was standing up super straight and tall by herself a few inches away from the rest. I quickly picked them up one at a time- they didn’t make a fuss this time- and placed them in the bags.
Back inside with “our girls”, still feeling like a rancher, I pulled out my trusty blowdryer and was surprised that they didn’t freak out over the noise of it- I think they felt that warmth and immediately knew it was going to be okay. After giving them a general blowing over for a bit I started taking each one out individually to get them more dry- a few of the smaller ones especially were practically dripping and were cold to the touch- probably because when they all piled around each other out in the rain to try to keep warm, the little ones got pushed to the bottom where a puddle had begun to form. They all seemed to thoroughly appreciate and enjoy the whole blow-dryer process and I’m curious if the ones we weren’t as “close to” will be a little more bonded to me after this.
After a time they were all dry, and, really with no other choice, decided now would be the best time to put them out in the real coop. I’ve had plans to move them there during the next 2 weeks sometime, but had wanted to do in my own step-by-step way. And of course, just like Nolan and potty training, circumstances and the chickens were beating me to the starting line.
I donned a headlamp and carried my two Trader Joe’s bags out into the pouring rain with thunder quite loud above me and raced quickly to the chicken coop. Popped them into the dry softness of the pine shavings one by one amidst their feverish chirpy protests and then raced back inside.
I came back inside to see Ben with my eyes glittering bright and having that alive feeling inside. “I feel like a Rancher!” I told him laughing and smiling. Please don’t let any real cowboy people read this…….it was that coat and hat! I think I’m starting to remember why it was so fun to play dress up when were kids. All I need now is a holster for my hairdryer, and I could have ridden Nolan’s stick horse if I’d thought of it…..
We shall see how the unplanned transfer to the chicken coop turns out when this saga continues (tomorrow morning).

Introducing the 4 “girls” who gotten into our affections the most so far and have garnered names for themselves…..

These are the cuddliest or most friendly little chickens we’ve got so far….but there are 3 more large hens, and 7 more littler chicks who I must still introduce and discuss in the near future……

Clean up work at Nolan’s GG’s house went well. It was rainy which made it super fun for Nolan….see for yourself!
It’s really neat to see Nolan be so comfortable with his “GG”. He runs after her calling “GG! GG!! Can you (he means I) go look at the creek??”
Later Nolan insisted on trying to help Daddy cut up the branches- the tool was as big as he was! But that didn’t stop him from trying…..

Man I love these chickens! Nolan has spent a good portion of the day today outside by himself among the chickens. While he was out there I could hear him humming and singing and talking to himself (and the chickens). I looked out through the office window and saw him standing in the chicken’s water bowl, literally just hanging out in a bowl that’s ten inches across.
Later when he came running in Nolan told me, “I was getting baptized! I was getting baptized mommy!” Pretty soon, all his clothes were off and he was running around buck naked and “getting baptized” in a chicken water bowl.
Where do I draw the line? Shoes in the chicken enclosure AT ALL TIMES. He’s actually really good about that, and he’s a total expert with his chicken (rain) boots now. Oh yeah, and we rinsed him off after he was done with his foray.

I have a lot of great “Nolan Video Footage” sitting right here in my computer- all nice and orderly, filed by his age in months. Why aren’t you seeing it you wonder? Because I’m so behind! And it’s only getting worse as each month passes by. One rainy day I will have to catch up. Or rather, one rainy day when Nolan is with Grammy or Grandma. Not much computer work happens these days with our two and half year old around, so it’s usually get-in, pay the PG&E bill, and get-out, before Nolan threatens to shred our patience to tiny pieces.
Just picture it: Attempting to do your taxes or writing a well thought out email letter to your dear relatives, all the while a robust and friendly monkey (weighing over 30 lbs) is jumping all over you- climbing across your lap, hanging off your neck from behind you while you struggle to swallow, then sitting on your lap so that you keep having to tilt your entire upper half to the right or left in order to even see the computer screen (because the monkey is tall for it’s age, and you are short for yours), which then makes typing with two hands inefficient and more than un-ergonomic. This leads to the inevitable avoidance of said computer in order to spare our backs, our patience, and a myriad of other things.
But here’s a little tidbit I did manage to throw up real quick, that’s actually from only 2 nights ago- wow- something actually on here about the same time it happened! A lot of things you’ll probably be seeing in the near future may be months old already.

Hey, I’m just passing on what I’ve been told by this little guy:
I haven’t gotten a chance to mention it, but Nolan and the phrase “compost pile” the last 6 weeks is akin to…..ducks on water, or Ben and music. Not only does he use the phrase randomly at odd times in sentences that have nothing whatsoever to do with compost piles, but he whips out the phrase even more often whenever we have company- I think he thinks it’s impressive to people (ie…..friend says to nolan: “how are you nolan?” nolan smiles and says: “uhhhh….in…um….compost pile!”
He replaces words- many words- in songs with it. The more riled up he gets, the more he says it- “the compost pile came OVER the sea……..and a……COMPOST PILE!……I told you that I said NO COMPOST PILE……….mary had a little COMPOST PILE!! heeeeheeeheheeee” Anything and anywhere he can make it fit, he uses it- which of course, in most all cases, the phrase totally doesn’t fit the occasion or sentence, which makes it that much funnier- to us and him since he knows it.
Now he’s gone the next step and as of yesterday, Nolan has decided that he IS compost pile. “I’m compost pile.” “My name is…..compost pile!!” Perhaps this started when just a few days ago Nolan set a record for the number of times he said “compost pile” in a span of a few hours when our good friend Desiree was over. She tried to teach him a song that started “my name is No-lan” which he was supposed to then repeat, but he said instead of course: “my name is…Compost-Pile!!” We gave up after that.
The funny thing about all this is that you’d think we make a big deal about composting and talk about it a lot or something but we totally don’t. While we do have a real compost pile, we aren’t even actively composting at the moment (until we figure out a way to do it that keeps the varmints out). However, we did recently have a VERY large load of woodchips (like probably 12-15 cubic yards worth) delivered from a tree trimming company- I think it was this huge pile of chips sitting in our driveway for a time that Nolan was climbing up and around for awhile that made an impression on him and that he had started referring to as the compost pile. So I think that’s where it all began.

No time to divulge the whole story and visuals yet, but just wanted you to see part of the fluffy goodness that has recently come into our home- I have a special connection to this latest “project”- but it has affected each of the three of us in a good way- stories to come.

These are some of the first photos Nolan has taken with our camera now- I think it’s obvious when you look at these that he already has the makings of an excellent photographer. I mean, sock feet? Unflattering midway facial expressions? This boy has got what it TAKES to capture things no one else can.

It’s actually been raining- winter decided to come in spring I guess- so there was a rare bit of warm sunshine a few days ago and sitting out in the garden was just what Nolan and I both needed.

We have some freesia’s in our garden- they have that delightful perfumey scent that you just happen to catch whiffs of as you putter here and there around the vegetable beds. Nolan brought me some the other day of his own accord!
